The User's guide is intended for the person who is going to install and run a Combine system. It starts by giving an overview of the different parts of Combine, and then describes the different files, directories, utility programs and servers in some more detail to help the reader better to understand the different setups in which Combine can be used. The guide then describes how to install and configure the system, and explains what to put into the different configuration files. Finally it describes the tasks involved in running and maintaining a combine installation and concludes with a brief discussion on how to recover from different kinds of error conditions. This document is available in both an rtf and and html version.

Technical Reference

The Technical Reference describes in some detail all the parts of Combine, and also specifies the different file formats and communication protocols used in between the different parts. This guide is intended for someone who wants to modify or extend Combine, by for example, adding a parser for a new document format, writing their own harvester or changing the format of the harvesting database records to better suit a specific indexing solution. This guide is also available in both an rtf and html version.
