Quality Selection Criteria for Subject Gateways
http://www.sosig.ac.uk/desire/qindex.html

This is a reference tool for developing quality selection criteria for Internet resources.

DESIRE suggests that "a high quality Internet resource is one that satisfies the user". Librarians, information professionals and others building collections of Internet resources will need to develop their own set of selection criteria based on the specific needs of their target users and the aims of the service.

The guidelines are not prescriptive and are designed to help an institution or service develop their own tailor-made Scope Policy, Collection Management Policy and Selection Criteria. An example of a service that has used the list to develop criteria is given.

A comprehensive list of criteria is given, from which criteria relevant to the individual service can be picked. The list has been drawn from a "state of the art review" of current practice, library and Web literature.

These guidelines will be of use to everyone interested in the issue of information quality on the Internet, but will be of particular relevance to librarians and informational professionals who wish to:

  • establish Internet selection criteria for their service or institution
  • develop user education in critical evaluative skills for Internet resources
  • develop their own critical evaluative skills for Internet resources
