Services: Directory Services

The use of directories as widely-distributed information services is becoming widespread since the introduction of Internet-based directory technologies like LDAP. Although White Pages services are a major field of application, more and more other uses are developing in this field. One issue which still remains open is the lack of an infrastructure that makes such distributed information more accesible to the end user. It will be necessary to build an index system that collects data from directory servers and thus makes them searchable. In a second step, such a service will be integrated into the Web-centred model, providing users with a single interface to resource discovery.
