Abstract

This document reports on the second DESIRE-II Web Cache Managers Workshop held on 2-3 March 2000 at the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, MTA/SZTAKI, in Budapest, Hungary. General information

The second DESIRE II Web Caching Workshop was held in Budapest, Hungary on 2-3 March 2000 organised by TERENA and hosted by the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, MTA/SZTAKI.

The workshops was targeted to web cache managers and administrators from the academic community as well as from commercial ISPs. Lectures were held about caching architectures and communication protocols, cache monitoring and analysis and more interesting topics. In addition, practical hands on about cache meshes building were successfully carried out. A final session summarised the most recent developments and research issues. The workshop payed special attention to the local developments in Central and Eastern European Countries.

The general consensus of all those involved in this workshop was that it was a useful event and contributed to the dissemination and transfer of knowledge of Web caching technology which is becoming increasingly important on the global Internet.

Whilst Europe maintains a leading edge in the development and use of web caches, it is important maintain this advantage by dissemination experience such as this.

Peer Review Evaluation

Evaluation of the Workshop was done in the form of questionnaire which was distributed at the workshop.

  1. The Workshop was evaluated as either [Very useful] or [Useful] by all participants.
  2. There is a difference in estimation of importance of difference topics to participants that can be explained by their different areas of responsibility and interests.
  3. Quality of presentations was evaluated mostly as [High].
  4. General issues related to venue and workshop room, computer facilities, catering and social events all received [High] mark.
  5. All workshop participants expressed interest in receiving information about future similar events

Scope Statement

The Web cache managers workshop provides materials to support development and exploitation of technologies resulted from DESIRE II developments in Web caching technologies for European Web Index and Information Gateways. All these materials are developed and tested in real training for Web cache managers of European Information and Network service providers. Training program and workshop materials create a bridge between the technology and information specialists and end-users in research and academic community in Europe.
