Abstract

This document reports on the first DESIRE-II Web Cache Managers Workshop held on 25-26th February 1999 at the SURFnet offices in Utrecht, The Netherlands. An electronic copy of all materials is available from http://www.terena.nl/tech/d2-workshop/d2cache99/ and a full set of workshop materials, peer review analysis by participants and questionnaire form is available from the DESIRE Project Manager on demand.

The First DESIRE II Web Caching Workshop was held in Utrecht, Netherlands on February 25-26, 1999 and hosted by SURFnet.

This workshop was aimed at technical staff performing the role of web cache managers and those who are involved in technical policy planning issues associated with web caching.

The general consensus of all those involved in this workshop was that it was a useful event and contributed to the dissemination and transfer of knowledge of Web caching technology which is becoming increasingly important on the global Internet.

Whilst Europe maintains a leading edge in the development and use of web caches, it is important maintain this advantage by dissemination experience such as this.

Total number of workshop participants was 18 people from 12 European countries including 4 representatives from Central European countries.

Most of attendees were from academic and research community but 5 of them were from commercial companies which demonstrate growing interest in Web cache technologies among European industry. This issue was also stressed in the evaluation responses from commercial representatives.

Evaluation of the Workshop was done in the form of an email questionnaire following the workshop.

    1. Workshop was evaluated as either [Very useful] or [Useful] by all participants.
    2. There is a difference in estimation of importance of difference topics to participants that can be explained by their different areas of responsibility and interests.
    3. Quality of presentations was evaluated mostly as [High].
    4. General issues related to venue and workshop room, computer facilities, catering and social events all received [High] mark.
    5. All workshop participants expressed interest in receiving information about future similar events

Scope Statement

The Web cache managers workshop provides materials to support development and exploitation of technologies resulted from DESIRE II developments in Web caching technologies for European Web Index and Information Gateways. All these materials are developed and tested in real training for Web cache managers of European Information and Network service providers. Training program and workshop materials create a bridge between the technology and information specialists and end-users in research and academic community in Europe.
